TIAO in support of Government of Canada announcement on two-month GST break on some items over the holidays

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that for two months, starting December 14th, the GST/HST will be removed from 100% of groceries, restaurant meals, beer and wine, and other essentials. The federal Government also plans to send a Working Canadians rebate cheque of $250 in April to those who worked in 2023 and earned up to $150,000.

TIAO supports this move to address the affordability crisis experienced by consumers and businesses. Together with the Working Canadians rebate cheque, this tax break will help more consumers enjoy a festive meal out over the holiday season, supporting Ontario's restaurants.

TIAO will continue to monitor the state of Ontario's tourism and hospitality operators as they enter the holiday season.
