Ellie Joseph to Be Honoured as Tourism Champion of the Year at the 2026 Ontario Tourism Awards of Excellence

Ottawa, Ontario — The Tourism Industry Association of Ontario (TIAO) is pleased to announce that Ellie Joseph, Co‑Founder of Two Row on the Grand, will be recognized as the 2026 Tourism Champion of the Year at the upcoming Ontario Tourism Awards of Excellence, taking place on October 22, 2026, at the Westin Ottawa. The award ceremony will close Day 2 of the Ontario Tourism Summit 2026, celebrating leaders whose contributions have strengthened Ontario’s visitor economy and inspired the tourism community across the province.

A member of the Mohawk Nation, Turtle Clan, from Six Nations of the Grand River, Ellie Joseph has transformed the landscape of Indigenous cultural tourism in Ontario. Through her leadership of Two Row on the Grand — a ten‑day paddle along the Grand River that immerses participants in Haudenosaunee teachings, treaty relationships, environmental stewardship, and community connection — Ellie has created one of Canada’s most respected Indigenous‑led tourism experiences. “Along the way people paddle, eat and camp with the Six Nations… But the highlight is the cultural experiences and teachings intertwined with different Indigenous guest speakers.”

Now entering its eleventh year, Two Row on the Grand attracts participants from across Ontario and beyond, selling out annually and serving as a model for reconciliation‑focused, community‑driven tourism. Ellie’s commitment to authenticity — ensuring Indigenous tourism is led by Indigenous voices — has influenced tourism organizations, municipalities, conservation authorities, educators, and regional partners throughout the province. “Her ability to build relationships, inspire collaboration, and create authentic visitor experiences has established her as one of Ontario's most respected leaders in Indigenous tourism.”

Ellie’s leadership has also advanced sustainability and regenerative tourism practices. Most recently, she was recognized at the Ontario’s Southwest Tourism Conference with a Sustainability Tourism Award, along with her Two Row partner, Jay Bailey, for their influence and alignment in responsible travel. Their work demonstrates how Indigenous‑led tourism can model environmental stewardship, waste‑reduction practices, and a deep respect for the land and waterways that shape the visitor experience. “Recognized for implementing practices in waste management for the Two Row on the Grand, ensuring the footprint is minimized.”

The Tourism Champion of the Year Award celebrates individuals whose leadership creates lasting impact on Ontario’s tourism industry. Ellie Joseph embodies this spirit. Her work has elevated Indigenous tourism, strengthened regional and provincial partnerships, and inspired thousands of visitors to become ambassadors for understanding, respect, and reconciliation.

On October 23, Ontario’s tourism community will proudly honour Ellie Joseph — a visionary educator, cultural steward, and champion of tourism.
