TIAO Welcomes the Adjustment of Timing of Lane Closures on the Burlington Skyway

Tourism Industry Association of OntarioNews & Articles

In response to the combined advocacy efforts of TIAO and our tourism industry partners, the Ministry of Transportation has adjusted the timing of lane closures on the Burlington Skyway that was hampering the ability of visitors to travel to the Niagara region. The closures were originally set to start every Friday at 6:30 p.m. with full closures at 8 p.m., and now they have been moved to 10 p.m. on Fridays to 10 a.m. on Saturdays. This will allow more time for visitors to finish work and travel to Niagara.

The tourism industry in Niagara is valued at $2 billion and employs more than 40,000 residents which attracts over 13 million visitors each year. As such, Niagara heavily relies on smooth transportation links for visitors and workers alike, more crucial now than ever as it continues to recover from the effects of the pandemic—and during its peak season and in its first full year of tourism since 2019.

TIAO would like to thank Premier Ford and Minister Caroline Mulroney, as well as the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport and the Ministry of Transportation for working with us to reach an alternate solution. We would also like to thank the Niagara Falls Canada Hotel Association (NFCHA), the Ontario Restaurant Hotel and Motel Association (ORHMA), and the office of MPP Wayne Gates for working with us to get this adjustment pushed through.
